On Thursday, April 20th, the Bronx, and Westchester County – Beta Psi Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma hosted a “Time to get SAVED (Sigma’s Advocating Vital Early Detection) event. The alliance relationship between PCAA-DMV and Mt. Sinai helped to moderate a panel discussion and perform prostate cancer screenings. The event was held at the United Church of Jesus Christ in Bronx, NY.
Before and during this event, the Robert F. Smith - Mt. Sinai Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening van set up two-hours before the event to begin capturing local foot traffic around the church.
Once the event began, it included a book signing by PCAA-DMV Board President and Co-founder – Derrick A. Butts, who also moderated an interactive four-person panel discussion. The churched packed in 65 attendees for a Thursday evening and performed 45 PSA screenings. This was a WIN-WIN for the community in promoting prostate health awareness and allowing 45 black men to be proactively prepared for prostate cancer, if diagnosed.
The panel discussion was comprised of three prostate cancer survivors- Dr. Gregory Stanislaus (PCAA Board member), Porterfield Davis (Sigma), Derrick A. Butts (PHM formerly known as PCAA President/moderator, Alpha), Andrew D. Jones (Sigma) sharing their journeys, and Physician’s Assistant – Ian Haas (Mt. Sinai). During the interactive panel discussion, several attendees felt compelled to share their survivor’s stories too. The candid survivors’ stories were emotional and inspiring!
We were happy the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity reached out to (PCAA) after one of their members attended a PCAA co-hosted event with the Wall Street and Brooklyn Alpha Phi Alpha Chapters in East New York during a Black History Health Month – Prostate Cancer Awareness Event during February 2023.
We want to thank the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma – Beta Psi Sigma chapter for allowing PHM (formerly known as PCAA) to partner and participate in their prostate health awareness event. And a special thanks to Mt. Sinai Health System’s Administrative Director, Department of Urology, Robert F. Smith Mobile Prostate Cancer Screening Team - Yohaira Rojas for your continued support of PHM (formerly known as PCAA) events in the New York City area. In June 2023, PHM (formerly known as PCAA) will celebrate a one-year alliance partnership with Mt. Sinai Health System.
Thank you again for your support of PHM's (formerly known as PCAA) advocacy campaigns in your community and allowing us to help men – “Get a GRIP on Prostate Cancer!”
